Gibraltar Street’s final look will be revealed next month.
Oban Community Councillors were told at their May meeting that June 10 is the date when Argyll and Bute expects all the work to finally be finished.
The walkway connecting Tesco car park to the town centre has already been repaved in readiness for the last furnishings to arrive, including seats - and hopefully a bin.
Last April, a Freedom of Information request revealed that the consultation cost of earlier proposals, that Argyll and Bute had to drop, came to a total of £27,709.50
When it was discovered that Tesco could not gift the car park portion that enters the street because it only leased that land, the council had to significantly reduce the size of the development plan which meant a redesign.
Another public consultation followed but the latest option, costed in early 2023, exceeded the available budget.
As a result, Oban Lorn and the Isles Area Committee agreed with a recommendation by council officers to keep the site as it was and instead resurface it and provide upgraded street furniture and better lighting.
The project was funded through the Scottish Government’s Place-based Investment Fund.
