The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) will allocate $26 million to Tajikistan for the modernization of railways.

This was stated by the bank’s spokesman Anton Usov who added that the final decision on this will be taken by the bank's management in February 2018.

The funds will be allocated for the purchase of new wagons, diesel locomotives and rolling stock of the new generation, as well as repair kits, spare parts and other products by the State Unitary Enterprise Tajikistan Railways.

The Tajik government approved a program for the complete modernization of the country's railways, for which $109 million is needed.

"Within the framework of the railway modernization program, Tajikistan will acquire 2,000 new wagons and 40 diesel locomotives of the new generation. As it is a state program, Tajikistan also allocates money for its implementation. As far as I know, the government has already purchased 900 freight wagons and 8 diesel locomotives for Tajikistan Railways SUE,” Usov said.

Over the past nine months, according to the company, more than 100,000 people have used its services, which is three times more than in the past three years.

Tajikistan depends on rail transport for the movement of most commodities into the country and for exports, mainly aluminum. Rail transport in Tajikistan is limited, as the railroad system totals only 680 kilometers of non-electrified, single-track railway.
